Civil Unrest in Nepal
Over the past few days, Nepal has been gripped by violent civil unrest. In Kathmandu and most other major cities, frustration over government misgovernance and corruption simply boiled over after social media bans were imposed, becoming the final spark that ignited widespread protests. People have taken to the streets, torching and destroying government buildings and vehicles. In clashes with government forces, lives have been lost, students and children have been shot, and scores of people have been injured.
This situation has developed incredibly fast, and the violence is most unfortunate, but I am hardly surprised. People’s rights have been trampled on for much too long. While I’m saddened about the violence and loss of life, I am also relieved to tell you that all the Himalayan Life staff and children are safe. Karina and I are in constant communication with our senior leadership in the Himalayas, and together we are closely monitoring developments.
At this time, we ask for your prayers for Nepal, for peace, for protection, and for the emergence of a new and just leadership. Thank you for your concerns and for keeping the people of Nepal in your thoughts.
